I hear a lot about using range/armour in a 2:1 ratio and sticking to one chassis, but what about effectively using damage upgrade? Your thoughts on what combinations work? Thanks.

There have been many questions regarding damage and why it's not used more. To give you a very simple reply, damage helps a LOT when battles are very even (even amount of troops and builds), but as the difference in squads increases, they become rapidly less effective. Some people like to throw damage in, other don't.

It's very uncommon for you to have a big fight with even armies. Usually you will be able to pick players off one by one. If you have a big battle like that it is likely because you have been at war for a very long time and are essentially giving up, in which case your build won't really matter anyways :P

Thanks for the reply.
Can you be more specific on the ratios you would use with damage?

There is no real specific amount to use. As you pointed out, the known pro build is 2:1. Outside of that there aren't really any other build rules or guidelines. Feel free to experiment yourself and see what you like. In general I would say 1 full squad of damage for every 5-10 normal squads would be the most you should have, but its all up to you and what you like.

For the best type of units no. it is as follows:
Infantry/Fighters: 20 range and 10 armor OR 21 range and 09 armor.
Vehicles/Cavalry/Frigates: 10 range and 5 armor.
Tanks/Heavy Units/Mechs/Crusiers: range and 3 armor.

For the damage you can build 1 conscussive, 1 plasma and 1 explosive squad on every 5 conscussive, plasma and explosive squad. That will leave you with 15 full balanced squads and 3 damage squads.
But that stays optional since it will increase overhead and the further range units will be more expensive.
Most players dont build damage units.

Who told you about that cheap build? Because that's really ineffective.

Depends on your play style honestly. Damage units promote a more reckless playstyle. its really not popular among the higher tier players due to its "all in" nature.

While ideally you win every battle perfectly using range, in some cases that's not an option. Either due a complete stalemate of skill and activity (never seen that), or because you need the element of surprise. If everyone expects you to do the best thing, it may not be the best thing.

Keeping your options open is always a good idea.
