There is an area of land which is to the Southeast of New York State called Long Island. In Battle Dawn, this is considered water, however I know myself from living there, that millions of people reside on Long Island. I was wondering why this land is considered to be water, and we cannot make colonies there.

Mars does not have water at all (well not oceans). Fantasy doesn't even exist :P

It's just a playing map the details will never be perfect xD
