After several talks with Google and Microsoft Nokia has come to the conclusion that they will abandon Symbian as a Smartphone OS and instead switch to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.

On the question for the reason why they eventually chose for the newer, currently less successful Windows Phone 7 OS instead of the already well-established Google Android 2.3 OS, Stephen Elops replied that they would not be able to stand out from the competition when using Google Android.

Stephen Elops is the current (American) Nokia CEO (Chief Executive Officer), he was a chairman of Microsoft Corporations and he is an avid supporter of the Windows Desktop OS'. He has replaced the Finnish CEO Olli Pekka Kallasvuo.

The Nokia Shares have taken a hit of almost 10% upon the announcement of the new cooperation between the two companies at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona.

Discuss. (Was this a good move? If not, what platform would have been the best choice?)

I honestly would have chose them to stick to Symbian OS but oh well...

Time to move on and wellcome Win7 8-)
Until I can see what it'll look like on a normal Nokia phone, I'm pretty optimistic.

Arguments? Statements? Please? It might not be in discussions and debates but that doesn't mean it isn't either of them. It's a discussion of a World Event, placed here because it is mostly centered around the news.

Okay Winters.

Pros: Possibly greater stability (I ONLY said possibly) and also more compatibility ('cus for all I know, Windows' Media Player can play almost anything O.o)

Cons: Expect a higher pricing (It's Windows, after all), and also, possibly less compatibility for symbian java apps.

If you don't know what to say then why talk ?

Windows Phone 7 has had many bugs until now (including data being send without permission or notification heavily increasing bills of thousands of customers), it only supports h.264 as far as I know whereas for example Google Android also supports WebM and such.

It's pricing might be higher yes, no compatibility to be exact. Since you say you know a thing or two about coding, you should know the difference between the .NET framework and VisualBasics and Java?

Another thing to put in, symbian phones are still going to be sold for the next year or so at least. Microsoft hasn't got an exclusive deal, but it was very cheap for them.

For me, I always support Android. Nokia makes the phones. The Android source code is out there in the open source world. All they have to do, is create a custom Nokia ROM, with their own UI Interface (Like HTC Sense, Samsung Touch Wiz etc). I am sure they will actually compete better. No one today buys or opts for Windows 7. Especially with the iPhone and Android phones out there.

Android is much better than Windows 7 or the Mac OS, simply because its open source. You can customize it so much according to your needs, write custom ROMs and applications, and with a lot of great developers out there, it will be the way to go, since it is gonna be the most innovative and still is. Just watch for a couple of years, Android will be the way everyone will be going.

Iphone on the other hand provides a good, stable out of the box phone for people who dont know anything about customizing the phone for their needs or care about it.

Windows 7 is just out there, but I dont think it even compares to Android in terms of functionality and features.
