In the new testament of the bible, 666 is regarded as the number of the beast. It has been widely associated with the devil but with no real backing from my understanding.
616 is actually a more relevant evil number according to most historical manuscripts.

Aye. As Pete stated, the number of the beast pops up in the Revelations (the last book of the New Testament).
Specifically:
Revelation 13:16-18
"Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666."
There are other parts of Revelations that mention the "mark of the beast" and it's relevance, but off the top of my head, I can only remember the one (above) part of scripture where the number "666" is mentioned specifically.
There is much theological debate on what the root of this number is, and whether it will play out as it is said in prophecy and the "end of days" literally. I imagine that if & when we get there, it will likely be very cryptic, and as '13:18' indicates, will require some wisdom and calculation to make sense of it or even spot it.
I'll refrain from going in to too much speculation on the matter, as I am biased by my Christian beliefs. It would be very hard for me to be objective on the matter.
That is, unless of course, you insist. I shy away from cramming my own beliefs down anyone's throat. If one is curious, I will oblige.
