You don't really need much mentoring, all you really need to be taught. is good money and level management. Basically, your fighting level, is the level of your best equipped item (including kits and modules), so don't just buy new weapons when they become available, and have the rest of your mech at a low level. Also, don't buy new items at every level-up, wait a few levels, so you can save up, and upgrade all the items on your mech to a similar level.
Try to use a range of weapons as well, e.g. If you only have long range weapons, your opponent will simply get close, and you wont be able to fight back, or if you only have rocket weapons, you'll quickly use your ammo up, and be unable to fight.
Try fighting the computer for the first couple of matches, because there's no time limit against them, so you can take your time to think, and learn how to mouse-over enemy weapons, to see the range and damage, and attack accordingly. Once you've got the hang of things, move on to fight other people online, because you get more reward, and fight people of similar level (rather than increasing levelled computers)
