Anime comes form the term Animation. Animation spelled in japanese is アニメーション. Romanized is Animeshun. Hence -Anime-. Cartoons came first btw. Cartoons were conceived from as early as 19th century. Anime was conceived in 20th Century Japan. The difference between the two was that anime was originally reels of paper. (think of a flip book) Where as Cartoons were at first drawings that usually parodied something. *Modern Day Anime* arrived as early as 1950's after the U.S. essentially took over Japan temporarily. With it we brought our Modern Cartoons. Pre- World War Anime was mostly propaganda. That's been mostly phased out since post-war japan period. Nowadays, Anime essentially is cartoons that cater to the japanese public. Don't say cartoons is different from anime now. It's not....
