It does seem that an increasing number of countries are moving into stage five of the demographic transition model. However, the possibility of Japan's population falling dramatically in a relatively short time period is very low. I believe that the Japanese government carried out some research regarding a potential decline in population due to a low birth rate, and the results were that such a situation is highly improbable in the near future. Japan should really create some form of pro natal policy.

I agree with tmog a major problem within the next 60 or so years probably isn't going to happen these types of predictions are a worst case senario but the decreasing interest in sex will create large problem if it continues and this likely comes from enormous stress to do well in college and high school
they spend a great deal of time trying to do better in school and thus subconsciously repress their sex drive when it should instead be developing

What`s happening in Japan is no bad thing. The article is a massive exaggeration - the country won`t collapse because of falling population. It will simply steadily drop until it reaches a new stable level.
Considering the massive population of the world - 7 billion this year - and the implications that has for the environment, food supplies, etc, falling population is no bad thing.
If only everywhere had a falling population like Japan!
