Since the old client is no longer available, Is it ever going to be released for private servers? There are some coding things I want to try out and I think a private server would be really cool.

Don't know about private servers, but Andrew posted he might be bringing the old client back about a year ago. I'm assuming it's been dropped but who knows?

I believe BD classic is at the very end of the to-do list. Don't expect anything anytime soon.

Would it be unreasonable to give the old client to a trusted player (so he can host it) on the conditions that he uses it for non-profit?

Yeah. The whole point of moving forward is to let go of the past. Sometimes nostalgia keeps us clinging to the ghost of a memory, but in the end, change is the only thing you can rely on.
Perhaps someday we will do a classic BD event or something, but for now, the client goes to the archives.
The old client was special, and was our root. It will hold a dear place in all of our hearts. But...its time to let go  at least for now.
