I wonder if anyone will look back on the NRA and say "those guys were wacko!", or if we are all going to look back and think "damn...we should have listened to those guys!"?
Have a look at this article. Time will tell...

I Personally prefer a gun free society, like in India, but in a society where people already own so many guns, this would be a pretty stupid move. Only the bad guys will end up with guns, and guess what will happen next.

In the short term this is a bad move. Americans have alot of firearms and it would be impossible to force everybody to hand in all of their guns. It just means guns will be in more of "the wrong hands" than good ones.
But in the long term, It does make sense from a governments perspective. They've got to start sometime. People just won't be happy if it happens in their lifetime.

No. It doesn't make sense when you try to make a law that clearly and deliberately violates an amendment in the very constitution that your country is founded upon.

I said from a governments perspective. In 300, 400, 500 years time, they will want to be more in-line with the rest of the worlds gun laws. They will want to have more controll over the people.

That's the problem. You're thinking about the future, not the present. Hell, world war 3 or some sort of catastrophic event happening in the next 300 to 500 years is inevitable. How do you know there will be countries in 300 years? How do you know the US will be around in 300 years? Obama isn't saying outlaw guns in a couple centuries. He's saying outlaw them now.

Yes I'm thinking about the future. As do alot of people. Especially people in the business of running a country.
And yes you're right. A catastrophic event happening in the next 500 years is very possible. And that event could involve gun weilding american citizens working against the governments interests. That's why he wants to outlaw them now. Because he knows it will take a long time to reduce the huge number of guns in circulation.
