Children are already restrict from things that are bad for them (e.g. alcohol, tobacco), so they should be restricted from cola and chocolate, which are bad for them.
Cola Most people wouldn't let a kid drink coffee, because caffeine is bad (neurotoxic, addictive, causes stress, anxiety, decreased intelligence, etc.), but cola also contains caffeine, and even though the concentration is lower than in coffee, children are much smaller than adults, so it has a higher effect (e.g. ~3 glasses of cola a day is contains enough caffeine to get a 6 year old addicted [extrapolated, not referenced]).
Chocolate As for chocolate, it also contains caffeine (but a smaller amount), theobromine (which is toxic*), and lead (which can interfere with brain and neuron development in children). *Many people think chocolate is only toxic to dogs, but it is also toxic to humans. While it is more toxic to dogs (TD 16mg/kg compared to 26mg/kg), it is seen as more of an issue for dogs because generally have a lower body mass than adult humans, and would eat chocolate without restraint if given the chance... but doesn't that also sound exactly like children as well?

umm coke, get rid of it, no benefits. on the other hand, chocolate in small amounts is actually good for you.

Yeah, but when do kids do anything in moderation? minpk wrote: you do know that you need lead to live right? Preeeeety sure you don't. Also, I initially chose cola rather than carbonated soft drinks in general, because I thought the caffeine was the worst thing in any soft drink, but now I've read that the sugar they use is the worst thing in it (even more addictive than cocaine according to rats), it causes all sorts of health problems [liver disease, obesity, metabolism problems, cancers, etc.] is more addictive than the amount of caffeine in cola, etc.). For more scary info, read here.

I think they shouldn't be given to kids. But the way cola and chocolate are portrayed in the media, it's doesn't look dangerous so most people usually don't bother looking further into this.

Cola: Its not bad for you in moderation, it just contains a few things that aren't good for your body in large quantities. Its actually good if you have a stomach ache and its flat, as the syrup helps make you feel better.
Chocolate: Same as above, if you/a kid doesn't have it too often, then its not really a problem. No food is really directly bad for you in a small amount, its just not good every single day for a week.
While there is Aspartame in Coke and other soda's, and is believed to lead to cancer and such, it eventually does leave your system, therefore its fine in moderation
