You're better off aiming for a high rank later in the round, it's a lot more productive.

Early in the round? Conquer like crazy, take risks and hope they pay off.

...or donate

One of the key aspects of being a good rank any time of the round is having a good and loyal alliance. without one, you wont keep that rank for long

Hmm. To get a good rank in the beginning of a round you have to CONQUER. Priority is units and conquers, rather than structures. Unfortunately it's harder to do this now because of the requirement of your Metal/Gold structure to be built in order to attack other colonies. So, you could either hope your lucky in that you can conquer others without using too many units, or donate.

Well, the things I've seen people do are:

1) Donate- quite possibly the easiest, and most expensive, method. Place your colony close to as many other colonies as possible, donate, then go crazy conquering people.

2) Find a good alliance- Find an alliance that is willing to help you by providing you with resources, colony defence, and extra support when attacking

3) Persevere- Find a quiet spot, and stick a Training Base close to as many colonies as possible, and conquer as many as possible.

It's best to target low ranked colonies, with little to no defence. This way, you can easily gian the conquerer andthe resources provided. This is something that starts off hard, and ends up being easy as you gain more conquerers. But this comes at a cost, because as you conquer more people, you have more to lose if YOU are conquered. Always be sure that you have plenty of defense, and ask your alliance mates to help if they're willing to.

More conquerers --> More Resources --> More Units --> Higher Rank

Repeat untill you'r satisfied with the result

Hope this helps
