Depends on what kind, can you be more specific?
The general idea is for you to see what kinds of units are in an army so you know what to send against them.

OK, I have seen a green elongated looking star on the screen and thought it was a different type of scan. Maybe it's just a regular scan with the wrong coordinates given?

Ah, that would be a satellite scan. That's to add radar to an area so you can see the outposts and moving squads nearby. Sort of like a temporary Radar Outpost, but with a larger area.
