even if you get conquered you gain a big chunk of resources and you would have been conquered soon after your protection ran out any way

I usually give up the protection first thing.

It gives you enough resources to build some structures, and make a few units out of whats left

Newbie = not worth it, since u will get the same amount of resources during your protection, u will get the same structures and same units.
Pro = this is the 1st thing you should do
