I built my first tower. It immediately was obstructed. Is that normal? Do I need to do something to obstruct it?

Yes towers are immediately obstructed for the purpose being to allow those near to attack whilst they have no sight of the area, could be classed as a dirty move but that is my opinion.
As Grizzly said above it only lasts to Minimum - 3 Ticks & Maximum - 6 Ticks
