at this moment, I would have to say no 
I can see that you'd like it, heck even I would, but there is no way. Like Antares said, within 20 seconds it will be smack talking only : I kill you - eat that - now you'll die - etc etc...
Supermechs is for every age and I don't want to see a 9 years old learning some new words if you know what I mean.
Every chat would need to have a mod in it or at least a 'report' button and with that the need to ban a player for offensive language.
The other way would be to add an insane long censored word list. Try to write FIRETRUCK then 
No sorry, a chat is at this point not possible

what about about a global chat? not during the match but while waiting or something
it feels so empty w/o some for of chat.

agree, how about a separate chat that will stay there no matter where u go, like the chat in Kong?

Yeah I was actually going to suggest something like this, as as lifenstuff says the game feels like it's missing a really important social aspect (which is incredibly important for all multiplayer games)

Chat with 'mute' and 'report' functions.
Anyone trying their best to 'troll' can be banned from chat for some set time.
Also about "9 year olds learning new words", add an 'are you over 13?' question, that way you aren't responsible as guardians. Under 13s have chat disabled.
Sorry for bumping an old thread but I think chat is an important aspect of an multiplayer game.

How about the way they do in smash bros (which has 4 pre-set messages, which you activate with one click, rather than typing the entire message)?
You can't say as much as typing, but there's no chance of rudeness, and it's quick.
Also, I'd like to see more 'taunt' (e.g. ones for when you're happy, ones for when you mess up/ get a bad damage, one for when you're angry etc.)
